Scott's Story
The Treon Strong Foundation, Inc is a non-profit foundation set out to raise awareness against brain tumors and help support families affected by life-crisis. The foundation is in honor of Scott Treon, who lost his life to Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) stage 4 brain cancer, at the young age of 46. Scott was the loving husband of Lenae Treon, and the father of three young girls, Kaila, Madi, and Emma. After a little over 13 months of battling, with the tumor reoccurring 2 times, Scott passed away on September 5, 2016.
Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common malignant type of brain cancer affecting 3 out of every 100,000 people per year. It is the most aggressive type of cancer, beginning in the brain. Although there are clinical trials, just like the one Scott was on, AVERT, there is no cure for this type of cancer. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, are the only forms of treatment for this type of cancer. Scott underwent all of these. Despite maximum treatment, the cancer usually reoccurs, which is what happened to Scott twice.
Scott was the assistant director of Huntersville Parks and Recreation for 8 years. He was very involved in the community as well as in sports. Scott was actively involved in coaching. Whether it was middle school, tournament, or rec, he was very passionate about each game. Every year in August, we host a Treon Strong Softball Tournament. This is a way for us to continue his legacy and love for the game of softball. Funds raised will go towards research, life care and towards athletics to encourage kids to continue playing and help them succeed in the athletics they are passionate about.
Scott always had a positive outlook on life. Whether it was at work, on the field, at home, wherever it was. While in the hospital for the third tumor, he said to his daughter Madi, “Cancer did not beat me. I have reached the finish line. Heaven is the finish line. Heaven is the prize.” Never once did Scott give up on his fight. He never let the cancer take over. He stayed strong for wife, daughters, family, and friends. Scott was strong, he was “Treon Strong”. The name of this foundation stands in the memory of him, to keep his name alive and to use his faith, determination, and strength, as a reminder to all of us to never give up. Our goal is to continue his legacy and raise money for brain cancer awareness and research, to help others in their fight with brain cancer, those going through hospice or palliative care and showing others to continue to believe and always go for what you are passionate about.
